Claire Johnson’s Senior Portraits Surrounded by Wildflowers | Jack Hill Park

Claire Johnson’s senior portrait session at Jack Hill Park in Elk Grove was one of those evenings that just comes together in the best way. Getting to work with seniors during this season of their lives is easily one of my favorite parts of what I do—being trusted to capture such a big milestone never gets old, and sessions like this are exactly why.

Claire is a beautiful, kind, and soft-spoken young lady who brought such a genuine presence to her session. She came in feeling a little nervous—which is completely normal—but she was open to the experience, and it didn’t take long before she started to relax and really enjoy it.

We met at Jack Hill Park here in Elk Grove, and with her parents there helping with outfits, props, and just keeping things light, the whole session felt comfortable pretty quickly. We had music going, took our time moving through different spots, and just let things unfold naturally.

I had photographed her sister Lauren’s senior photos back in 2023, so it was really special getting to work with their family again and see that connection come full circle.

Claire will be graduating from Pleasant Grove High School in May 2026 and heading to Fresno State to study speech language pathology, with plans to become a licensed speech language pathologist.

Soft Light and an Easy Start

The open field areas at Jack Hill Park were the perfect place to start. The tall grass and scattered wildflowers gave us a really natural setting, and the light that evening stayed soft and even, which made everything feel relaxed right away.

Claire started in an off-white sundress with sandals, and bringing in the jean jacket gave us a little variety without needing to fully change looks. It kept things simple while still letting us mix things up as we moved through the space.

She had mentioned liking photos where she could sit and be surrounded by the plants and flowers, so we made sure to spend time there. Mixing in seated shots with a few standing and walking moments helped ease into the session and keep everything feeling natural.

We also incorporated her cap and gown with this outfit, which was such a fun way to highlight the graduate side of her session. I especially loved focusing in on the tassel with the Class of 2026 detail—a small touch, but such a meaningful part of senior portraits.

Where Personality Starts to Show

As we moved into a different part of the park near the bridge and creek, the background shifted just enough to give us a new look while still keeping that same natural feel. The mix of wood, water, and greenery added a little more depth compared to the open field.

This is where Claire changed into her Fresno State outfit—jean shorts, her Bulldogs t-shirt, and red Converse—which brought in a more personal side to the session. Claire felt it was important to show off her Fresno State gear since that’s where she’ll be attending in the fall, and I loved being able to include that next chapter in her portraits.

The pennant worked really well here too. It gave her something to interact with and added a pop of color that stood out nicely against the greens around her. Between the bridge, the path, and the creek, this part of the session felt easy and natural with a little more movement built in.

A Change of Pace to Wrap Things Up

For the final part of the session, Claire changed into a floral sundress, which brought in a softer mix of colors and a slightly different feel compared to the first look. Adding the white jean jacket for a few shots gave us even more variety without overcomplicating anything.

We stayed in areas that gave us a mix of open space and some tree coverage, which helped create both clean backgrounds and a little more depth depending on where we were shooting. By this point, she was completely comfortable, so we were able to add in more movement—walking, turning, and just letting things feel more natural.

It was a really nice way to finish the session and bring everything together with a different look while still keeping things consistent overall.

A Session That Came Together Naturally

This session really came together in a way that just felt easy from start to finish. Even with a little bit of nerves at the beginning, Claire trusted the process, and that made a big difference as we moved through each part of the session.

Having her parents there to support her, bringing outfits that felt like her, and choosing a location like Jack Hill Park all played a role in how smoothly everything went. It created a balance between structure and flexibility, which is always the goal.

It was great getting to photograph another milestone for this family, and I’m really excited to see what’s ahead for Claire as she heads to Fresno State.
