Hovhannes John Petrosyan’s First Birthday Cake Smash at Jack Hill Park
One of my favorite things about being a photographer is getting to see babies grow during their first year. I first met Hovhannes when he was just a tiny newborn, so getting to photograph his first birthday cake smash was extra special. We met at Jack Hill Park in Elk Grove, which gave us beautiful green grass and warm sunlight for his milestone session. Hovhannes came dressed in the cutest outfit with embroidered details, and from the moment we started, he was full of personality. The first part of Hovhannes’s session focused on simple portraits celebrating his big milestone. He sat in the tall grass holding wooden letters that spelled “ONE.” These portraits are always some of my favorites because they capture babies exactly as they are at this age — curious, playful, and full of expressions. Hovhannes had fun exploring the letters, turning them over, and even trying to nibble on them a little. The bright green grass and warm light made the whole scene feel soft and natural, which is perfect for outdoor milestone photos.
Rustic One-Year Portraits with Balloons and Wooden Props in Elk Grove
When Clarisa filled out the questionnaire before the session, she mentioned wanting a rustic look with wooden letters and balloons, along with colors like grey, gold, forest green, and white. Jack Hill Park ended up being the perfect setting for that vision and is one of my favorite outdoor portrait locations for milestone sessions in Elk Grove. For this setup, Hovhannes sat on a wooden crate with large “ONE” letters and star balloons nearby. A big gold number one balloon added that classic birthday touch while still keeping the setup simple and natural. He had so much fun with this part of the session. At one point he grabbed his little cowboy hat and proudly held it up like he knew exactly how cute he looked. Those little personality moments are always the best.
The “ONE” Crate Portraits for a First Birthday Milestone Session
Another part of the session featured Hovhannes sitting inside a wooden crate with the ONE letters placed across the front. This setup is always a favorite for parents because it highlights the milestone in a simple way while still keeping the focus on the baby. Hovhannes looked completely relaxed sitting in the crate, and once he found his hat, he decided that was the perfect accessory for a few portraits. Watching babies explore props like this always leads to the most natural expressions. Between Clarisa and Albert encouraging him, grandma clapping nearby, and a little help from Ms. Rachel playing in the background, we captured some really sweet smiles.
The Cake Smash Fun Begins for Hovhannes’ First Birthday
Of course, the highlight of every one-year milestone session and cake smash session is the cake. For Hovhannes’ smash, the setup included a soft neutral banner, a basket full of teddy bears, the large number one, and a bright cake with green frosting. At first he looked at the cake like he wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. But once he realized it was meant to be touched — and tasted — things got a lot more exciting. Soon he was happily digging into the frosting, getting it on his hands and enjoying every bite. His expressions went from curious… to surprised… to pure joy as the cake smash officially got underway. Those messy, frosting-covered moments are always the perfect way to wrap up a first birthday session.

Jack Hill Park is one of my favorite outdoor locations in Elk Grove for milestone sessions. The tall green grass, warm sunlight, and open space make it a beautiful spot for babies and young children to explore during their photos.
