tips on how to ensure having a good family portrait experience

Welcome to another photography blog article, where I am dedicated to helping families seeking to capture precious moments in Elk Grove, California, and the greater Sacramento area! I understand organizing a family portrait session can be a delightful yet challenging task, particularly when dealing with various dynamics, especially with kids. Whether you have camera-shy little ones, independent toddlers, or reluctant teenagers, this post is tailored to provide insights and tips for a stress-free and enjoyable family portrait experience.

1. Setting Expectations for a Seamless Session:

As you consider scheduling a family portrait session with me, I want to ensure that you are well-prepared for a seamless experience. Open communication is key and by letting me know about potential challenges when it comes to kids, I will know ahead of time what adjustments need to be made at the session.  This is especially true if your child tends to be a bit hesitant in front of the camera or you have a moody teenager who is not looking forward to participating. Letting your child know about the upcoming photoshoot, setting expectations, and preparing your child ahead of time is essential. Involve them in the planning process, seeking their input on outfit choices or suggesting they bring a favorite toy. This active participation can set a positive tone.

2. Embracing Patience and Flexibility:

My approach to family portraits revolves around understanding the unique dynamics of your family. I come equipped with patience and flexibility, allowing your child the time they need to feel comfortable. The goal is to adapt to your family's vibe, creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.  However, it is also very important that you as the parent set the vibe for the session by being relaxed, flexible and patient.  Relinquish the control over to me and let me guide the family through the session and for you not to worry or be uptight about how kids are acting.  If you are constantly fussing at the kids, they will shut down and you will be frustrated.  This can quickly end a session.  Let the kids take their que from you.  If you are relaxed and aren’t fussing, they sense that and it can make the difference between a successful session and one that never got started.

3. Adding Fun Elements to the Session:

My goal is to make your family portrait session an unforgettable experience. I go beyond traditional approaches by infusing an extra dose of fun into the session. Especially when it comes to smaller children, I incorporate playful elements that not only capture your child's interest but allow them to be themselves and have fun. Whether it's bringing along props, introducing interactive toys, or suggesting enjoyable activities, my goal remains steadfast—to capture the essence of your family in moments of genuine connection and shared laughter. Before the session kicks off, let's talk about how we can add even more fun into the mix. Your input is invaluable, and together we can brainstorm ideas that resonate with your family's personality. Feel free to share any cherished items, favorite games, or quirky accessories that hold significance for your loved ones. This collaborative approach ensures that the session becomes a tailored experience, reflecting your family's uniqueness in every frame.

4. Building a Connection with Your Child:

Before diving into the session, I take some time at the start, to connect with your child on a personal level. I ask questions and get down to their level so they can get comfortable with me.  By me understanding their interests and making them feel at ease sets the stage for authentic and heartwarming photographs that truly reflect your family bond. As parents, engaging in conversations with each other, joking, and playing during the session can have a positive impact, especially with older children. Reminisce about favorite memories or discuss fun activities to keep them involved.

5. Letting Kids Be Themselves:

Allowing your child to express their personality is crucial during the shoot. Every child is unique, and embracing their individuality can prevent non-participation and frustration. If kids are feeling shy or uncooperative, let them take a break. Patience is key, and sometimes a short pause can make all the difference. Keep in mind that candid moments often make for the most memorable photos. If that means no one isn’t posed exactly perfectly or you are looking at each other instead of the camera, that is ok.  Those make for some amazing photos.

6. Celebrating Candid Moments:

While there's a session plan in place, I value spontaneous, unscripted moments. I specialize in capturing candid shots that showcase the real and joyful interactions within your family. Some of the best moments happen when your child is unaware of the camera, revealing their true spirit. You can help foster those moments by the fun and genuine interaction you have with the kids.

7. Allowing for Refreshing Breaks:

Alright, let's keep it real about those energy levels, especially with the little ones. If we need a breather, no worries! Snacks are the secret weapon against the "hangries," and staying hydrated is like our superhero shield against grumpy vibes. Sometimes, kids just need a quick stretch or a little break to shake off the wiggles and extra energy. Taking short breaks ensures that everyone feels relaxed and ready to continue, contributing to an overall positive experience.

8. Fostering a Positive Atmosphere:

Throughout the session, my commitment is to maintain a positive and encouraging atmosphere. I celebrate every little win and reassure you that imperfections are part of the journey. My goal is to make your family photography experience not only successful but also filled with lasting, beautiful memories. Encouraging laughter and playfulness with your child can lead to capturing genuine expressions instead of sad or fake ones.
