What to Expect During Your Newborn Photography Session: A Step-by-Step Guide
My Approach to Newborn Photography
When you book a newborn session with me, you’re not just getting beautiful photos—you’re getting a relaxed experience designed around your baby and their needs. Whether you’re thinking about booking a newborn session or already have a date on the calendar, you may be wondering what actually happens during a newborn photography session. How do I capture those peaceful, adorable images? How involved are parents during the session? Can a baby really be “posed”?
The Session Is Centered Around Your Baby
Newborn sessions can last anywhere from 2 to 3 hours. Why so long? Because the session revolves around your baby’s needs and comfort. Every baby is different, so I allow plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, and breaks whenever your baby needs them. If your baby is wide awake, we can give them time to settle and drift back to sleep. There’s no rush.
If your little one sleeps soundly and we’re able to move easily from one setup to the next, we may finish sooner. In general, though, we go at your baby’s pace rather than trying to fit the session into a strict timeline.
Creating a Comfortable and Safe Space
My newborn sessions take place in my dedicated home studio in Elk Grove, California, where the space is designed with your baby’s comfort and safety in mind. Here’s how I create a comfortable environment while keeping your baby’s needs and safety at the center of the session.
Warmth and Comfort Are Key
My newborn sessions take place in my cozy, dedicated home studio. I've designed the studio to be a comfortable and welcoming environment for you and your baby, with a variety of props, wraps, blankets, and newborn outfits available for the session.
I also keep the studio comfortably warm—much warmer than you might be used to at home—to help keep your baby warm and comfortable during posing and outfit changes. I use white noise and gentle background music to help create a calm, relaxing environment throughout the session.
Safety Is My Top Priority
I personally handle, wrap, dress, and pose your baby throughout the session. I also work with a trained assistant who is there to support me and help spot your baby when needed, especially when I’m photographing your little one in props. This allows me to concentrate on creating the photograph while making sure someone is always close by when additional support is needed.
I only use poses and setups that I feel are safe and comfortable for your baby. Every newborn is different, and if a particular pose isn’t working for your baby, we simply move on to something else.
I also make sure all props, blankets, wraps, and outfits are clean and ready for each newborn session. If you’d like to learn more about how I approach newborn safety, you can read my Parent’s Guide to Safe and Comfortable Newborn Photography.
What Happens During the Session
From start to finish, I take care of everything needed to capture beautiful newborn images.
My Approach to Newborn Posing
I typically begin the session with your baby wrapped, which helps many newborns settle comfortably while we start taking photos. From there, I gradually work through different setups, wraps, outfits, and poses based on how your baby is doing.
I use a variety of blankets, backdrops, props, and accessories from my studio collection to create different looks throughout the session. I’ll also use the color preferences and other information you share with me before your session to help guide the setups I prepare.
Every baby is different, so I don’t follow a rigid posing schedule. Some babies are comfortable moving through several poses, while others have definite preferences about how they want to be positioned. I follow your baby’s cues and adjust the session as needed rather than trying to force a particular pose or setup.
Tips for a Fuss-Free Session
Babies fuss—it’s completely normal, and it doesn’t mean the session isn’t going well. If your baby needs to eat, be changed, soothed, or simply take a break, we stop and give them what they need.
A good feeding before the session can help your baby settle in, but every newborn is different. I leave plenty of time in the session for additional feedings and soothing whenever needed.
There are also a few simple things you can do before arriving that can help your newborn session get off to a comfortable start. You can read my Tips for Calming a Fussy Baby for five additional ways to help keep your little one comfortable and content during the session.
What Is the Parents' Role During the Session?
One of the nice things about a newborn session is that you can sit back and relax while I take care of your baby and work through the different setups. I handle the wrapping, dressing, posing, and soothing throughout the session, with my assistant there to help me as needed.
You’re welcome to watch the session, take a few behind-the-scenes photos, read a book, or simply enjoy a little downtime. I’ll let you know whenever I need you, such as when it’s time for a feeding or when we’re ready for parent and family photos.
Including Family in Your Newborn Photos
While your newborn is the focus of the session, I also love including parents and siblings in a few photos with the newest member of the family. Here’s what to expect when it comes to family and sibling photos.
Family and Sibling Photos
I begin each session by focusing on your newborn and working through their individual setups first. Once those are complete, we can move into parent, sibling, and family photos.
If siblings will be included, I ask that they arrive toward the end of the session with another adult, such as a grandparent or caregiver. Newborn sessions can last 2 to 3 hours, and asking young children to wait quietly in the studio for that entire time can be difficult. Having them arrive later keeps their time at the studio shorter and allows us to focus on them when it’s time for sibling and family photos.
Because the session is primarily focused on your newborn, family and sibling photos are a smaller portion of our time together. If you’d like to be included in photos with your baby, come dressed and ready to be photographed, and I’ll guide you through everything once it’s time for those images. If you are planning to include family or sibling photos, we will have already discussed this ahead of time, and it will be noted in your questionnaire so we can plan accordingly before your session.
